Médecin à Domicile 24/7 Home Doctor Services in Le Morne & Bel Ombre

On the remote south-west coast, from Le Morne and La Gaulette to Chamarel and Bel Ombre, Médecin à Domicile sends a registered doctor to your resort, villa or family home, 24/7.

Doctor at Home in Le Morne & Bel Ombre

This is the most dramatic corner of Mauritius. Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, towers over a lagoon that kitesurfers know from all over the world. Inland, the road climbs through the hills to Chamarel, with its Seven Coloured Earth and waterfall, while further along the south coast the shore opens onto the resorts and golf of Bel Ombre. In between lie quieter villages such as La Gaulette, Case Noyale and Baie du Cap, where daily life follows the sea, the sugar cane and the mountain.

All that beauty comes with distance. The larger towns and main hospitals are a long drive away, and for a guest with a sprained ankle or a child running a fever in a holiday villa, that journey is the last thing anyone wants. A doctor who comes to the hotel room or the family home spares everyone the trip. We prefer to be honest, though: reaching this coast takes our doctors longer than reaching a town, so the coordinator always gives you a realistic arrival estimate when you call.

Villages We Reach Between Le Morne and Souillac

Our doctors travel the whole coast road around the south-west: the Le Morne peninsula, La Gaulette, Coteau Raffin and Case Noyale on the western side, Chamarel up in the hills, then Baie du Cap, Bel Ombre, Saint Félix, Riambel and Souillac as the coast turns east. Resorts, rental villas, guesthouses and village homes are all covered. Dispatch runs through our 18 GPS-tracked medical vehicles, so the doctor sent to you is the nearest one available at that moment, coming either from the west or from the south.

Kitesurfing, Hiking and the Heat on Le Morne Brabant

Much of what we treat here comes from the landscape itself. The lagoon off Le Morne draws kitesurfers and windsurfers, and a hard landing can mean a sprained knee, a twisted wrist or a cut from the reef. The trail up Le Morne Brabant is steep and exposed to the sun, and some walkers come down with heat exhaustion, sunburn or a turned ankle. Our doctors assess the injury, clean and suture wounds, give IV fluids for heat exhaustion when needed, and tell you honestly when an X-ray or a hospital assessment is the better option.

Care for Village Families from La Gaulette to Souillac

Behind the resorts live Mauritian families for whom the nearest town is a real journey, especially with an elderly parent or small children. Our doctors come to homes in La Gaulette, Chamarel, Baie du Cap, Riambel or Souillac for monthly diabetes and blood pressure check-ups, home blood tests and ECGs, children's consultations and flu vaccination. For patients at the end of life, we offer palliative care and carers at home, so families can keep their loved ones close. Telemedicine helps with follow-up between visits, and Eagle Insurance or Jubilee Insurance policyholders pay nothing up front.

Hotel Doctor for Resort Guests and Villa Renters

The resorts of Bel Ombre and the hotels and villas around Le Morne welcome travellers of every age from all over the world. When a child spikes a fever at night or a guest picks up a stomach bug, our hotel doctor service brings the consultation to the room or the villa terrace, in English or French. Every visit comes with proper paperwork, a medical report and an invoice recognised by international travel insurers, which makes the claim simpler once you are home. Before leaving, the doctor takes the time to explain the treatment clearly.

Emergencies Far from Town: SAMU 114 Comes First

On a coast this far from the towns, never wait in a true emergency. For chest pain, a possible stroke, serious breathing problems, major trauma after a kitesurfing or hiking accident, or loss of consciousness, call SAMU on 114 straight away. The nearest public hospitals are Souillac Hospital on the south coast and Victoria Hospital in Candos for the west. When a transfer is needed, the Médecin à Domicile ambulance service can take the patient to a hospital or clinic. Fevers, infections, gastro, sprains, wounds and sunburn, on the other hand, are exactly what a home visit is for.

Doctor at Home in Le Morne & Bel Ombre
Your Questions Answered

Living on or visiting the south-west coast raises its own questions: how long a doctor takes to get there, what a visit costs, kitesurfing injuries, sick children on holiday and which hospital to head for.

1. What does a doctor's visit cost at a hotel or villa in Le Morne or Bel Ombre?

The fee is Rs 3 000 for a daytime visit (08:00–18:00) and Rs 4 000 for a night visit (18:00–08:00). For visitors, the doctor’s official medical report and invoice are accepted by international travel insurers, so you can file a claim with your policy. If you are insured with Eagle Insurance or Jubilee Insurance, there is nothing to pay on the day; other insurers reimburse on claim.

Longer than in the towns, and we would rather tell you so. This coast is one of the most remote parts of the island, so instead of promising a time, the coordinator gives you a realistic estimate on the phone, based on where the nearest available doctor in our GPS-tracked fleet is at that moment. If symptoms are getting worse in the evening, call early rather than waiting for the middle of the night. For anything life-threatening, dial SAMU 114 at once.

We cover the south-west and south coast from the Le Morne peninsula to Souillac: Le Morne, La Gaulette, Coteau Raffin, Case Noyale and Chamarel on the western side, then Baie du Cap, Bel Ombre, Saint Félix, Riambel and Souillac. Doctors see patients in resorts, rental villas, guesthouses and family homes. Clear directions help a lot, especially for villas and houses away from the main road or up in the Chamarel hills.

Yes. Sprained knees, ankles and wrists, pulled muscles and cuts from the reef or the equipment are typical after a session in the lagoon. The doctor examines the injury, cleans and sutures wounds where needed and treats the pain. If a fracture or a head injury is suspected, the doctor will tell you that an X-ray or hospital assessment is needed, and our ambulance service can arrange the transfer.

In a life-threatening emergency, such as chest pain, stroke signs, severe breathing difficulty, major trauma or unconsciousness, dial 114 for SAMU before anything else. Souillac Hospital serves the south coast and Victoria Hospital in Candos the west: these are the nearest public hospitals. Médecin à Domicile also operates an ambulance service and can organise a transfer to a hospital or clinic. Our home doctors deal with everything that does not put life at risk.

Call 86121 and describe the situation: the child’s age, the temperature, how long the fever has lasted and whether the child is drinking. One of our doctors will come to your room or villa, examine the child and explain the treatment. Some signs call for SAMU 114 immediately: difficulty breathing, a child who is very hard to wake, or a seizure. While you wait, offer small sips of water and keep the room cool.
